Getting Started

Practices and procedures
You should first read the General Rules to understand expectations and policies with regards to working procedures.
Briefly read Writing to get a very quick overview of the standards that are expected for papers and presentations. It is extremely important that you come back to this list when you write your papers and do your presentations. Under no circumstances should you submit papers or presentations that do not meet these minimum standards.
Know your group members
You will be welcomed by the Social Officer. You should provide a phone number where you can be reached at all times. Rest assured that no one will use this unless it is absolutely urgent to contact you. Please see the contacts of our group members and there roles here.
Your colleagues can provide you lots of local information and tips for living in Singapore.
Buy a computer
For all newcomers, we offer you the opportunity to purchase a computer. It is highly encouraged that you use a MacBook as it facilitates other group members helping you if you run into problems. Configurations should be reasonable - mid-range CPU and good RAM, a SSD (do not bother with non-SSD hard drives, even though they are cheaper). Send your proposed configuration for approval before purchase and contact Procurement Officer for purchase.
Windows and Linux PC is acceptable. However, based on our previous experience, MacBook provides Microsoft Office, a native command line environment, high build quality, and super good battery life, so most people chose MacBook.
Setup your new computer
See computing guide. Please contact Computer Officer to help you if you have problems.
Setup NUS related stuff on your computer
2FA, Workspace One, and NUS VPN should be installed to access data when you are not on campus. Please find more details here: https://nusit.nus.edu.sg/itcare/it-guide-for-new-staff/
Setup your backup
Contact the Computer Officer and set up Crashplan for your laptop. This should be the first thing you do after your initial Mac setup. See computing guide.
Setup accounts on Github, OneDrive, Orion, and clusters
Contact the Computer Officer to set up your accounts on Github, OneDrive, Orion , and our compute clusters. Read the computing guide to understand what each of these does. Follow the instructions there to setup your cluster for computations.
Intra-group messaging, coordination and sharing
We use a number of messaging and document-sharing apps for internal-group communication platform. For messaging, Microsoft Teams is a useful app for research discussion based on the projects. We also use OneDrive for document sharing, Google calendar for schedule sharing and Mendeley and Zotero for references sharing. Contact Computer Officer for new user settings of the following accounts.
-
Microsoft Teams: Teams is an internal-group message app used for research discussion or private messages. Channels are created on a specific topic or project, which is easy to keep track of.
-
Microsoft OneDrive: For paper and other document sharing, we use OneDrive Business as provided by NUS. Different projects are stored in different folders.
-
NUS nBox: You can also use NUS nBox to share your data to other people.
-
Group Calendar: We have a shared calendar. Group events like group meetings need to be marked in
DengResearchGroup. For approved vacations, group members also need to enter the period of absence inDengResearchGroupcalendar before leaving (see General Rules for more details). -
Zotero: For reference management, we use Zotero extensively and exclusively to enable collaboration and sharing of references.
